Baldwin
Model: D
Serial: 76701
Year: 1936
Location: San. Jose, California
Description: Chuck Terpo of San Francisco rebuilt the action and Frank Bidinger of San Ramon did the rest.
John Bauer of Soquel has maintained and refined the instrument to my taste over the past three years.
-Case refinished and harp guilded
-New pin-block & strings
-New hammers & shanks
-New dampers
-etc.
-Wippens remain original, as do the ivory key covers (some small cracks, but none missing or broken)
Estimated 900 hours of serious playing by an accomplished amateur on the rebuild, so it remains quite fresh.
Though it's been voiced down considerably it remains a powerful instrument with a warm timbre, not bright, brassy or reedy. It is especially strong in the treble where Steinways (at least New York Steinways) are often weak.
